Supermoon 2021

April 26 2021

A super moon happens when the full moon coincides with the moon's closest approach to Earth in its orbit. Super moons make the moon appear a little brighter and closer than normal, although the difference is hard to spot with the naked eye.

According to Fred Espanak, eclipse expert and retired NASA astrophysicist, there will be four super moons in 2021, in March, April, May and June. The Farmer's Almanac only lists two, in April and May, but Espanak's definition of a super moon as a full moon within 90% of its closest approach to Earth gives us four to view this year.

The closest super moon this year will rise on May 26, 2021. This full moon is often referred to as a "Flower Moon," although it has different nicknames according to different cultures. Last year's Full Flower Moon lit up the spring sky and provided ample opportunity for photographers.
